Emerging WebBusinesses and Facebook
A Manual for Business Owners
3.   The biggest mistake that most everybody has made once on the Web.

Recommendation #1:  Commit upfront to avoiding the biggest mistake that everybody makes with their first adventure into WebBusiness.

             What is the biggest mistake?

                             1.    FACT:  Ninety plus percent of all websites for businesses and organizations are not performing as well as they might for one reason.

                       2.    FACT:  Your traditional business has regular hours of operation.  It does not matter if you are a retail store, a wholesale sales counter, construction job site or any other business.  During the hours of operation, there is someone who works for you whose primary responsibility is to stand at the front door and serve prospects and customers promptly and efficiently when they walk in the door.

                             3.    BIG PROBLEM:  Most business websites simply do not get the same attention, the same resources and the same support as the front door of their parent traditional business.  Some of the problem is the fact that WebBusinesses operate 24/7/365, but there are workarounds for this, the real problem is lack of commitment.

                       4.    I have gotten in the habit of checking the dates of the last update on the sites I visit on the web.  If a website has not been updated recently, then I wonder if you are still in business.

                              5.    There are a multitude of resources to help accomplish this mandatory task, for example, email auto responders.  But how many times have you requested information via email, gotten an immediate (0.01 second) bounceback thank you email, and then waited for 1-2-3 days for the information you requested.  Worst than that, how many times have you forgotten your question and who you asked, until you receive a reply three days later or visit that website again, probably by accident?  How many times have you failed to received any substantive response?

                              6.    SOLUTION:  Upfront, before you do anything else, I believe, if you are going to be online with your business, then you have to make the commitment at the ownership level to do it right, or probably not do it all.  If you think you have already done this, do it again before proceeding.  This is not the place to be thinking, “something is better than nothing”, or “try it and see if I like it”. If you are going to play, you need to “play to win.”

                         7.    If your existing WebBusiness is not doing what you want it to do, you are probably not ready for Facebook; unless you are 100% sure all you need is gross traffic.
